Recycled glass might help fend off seaside erosion

In the 1960 s, deep sea intrusion in a southeast Louisiana swamp killed the trees and plants that lived there. Currently brought back with freshwater, the swamp has become the excellent location for revegetation tasks– especially due to the fact that healthy and balanced swamps can function as a rate bump to slow cyclones.

That’s one reason that the open water of Bayou Bienvenue, once home to cypress and tupelo trees, currently organizes an island of native trees, turfs– and recycled glass. The man-made island is helping scientists understand a new method to coastal remediation.
